I am Gus Mares, owner and head coach of Pirate Bay Strength, with over 20 years of experience helping men and women transform their bodies, build strength and become more confident in what they are capable of. My specialty is lifestyle transformation through strength training. I work especially well with adults 35 and over who want to lose body fat, build muscle, develop stronger legs and glutes and become stronger overall, whether they are brand new to training or ready to take their fitness to another level. My background includes competitive bodybuilding, powerlifting and strongman, and I bring those principles into everyday training in a way that fits the individual. My approach is detailed, supportive, challenging and built around progression, not gimmicks or quick fixes.

The Background
20 years coaching, head coach and owner.
Gus Mares has more than 20 years of experience helping men and women transform their bodies, build strength and become more confident in what they are capable of. Gus is the owner and head coach of Pirate Bay Strength and brings that experience to one-on-one coaching at Trinity Training West Covina.
That is a long enough career to have coached a wide range of people, and Gus's own description reflects it: everything from major weight-loss and body-recomposition transformations to first-time lifters.
Lifestyle Transformation
Strength training for lifestyle transformation.
Gus's specialty is lifestyle transformation through strength training. The clients Gus works with especially well are adults 35 and over who want to lose body fat, build muscle, develop stronger legs and glutes and become stronger overall.
That includes people who are brand new to training as well as people ready to take their fitness to another level. Most sessions happen on The Floor; read how strength and conditioning and weight loss training work across Trinity.
Bodybuilding & Strongman
Bodybuilding, powerlifting and strongman background.
Gus's own background includes competitive bodybuilding, powerlifting and strongman, and the principles from all three are brought into everyday training in a way that fits the individual. As Gus puts it, you do not have to be a competitive athlete to learn how to train like one.
Gus has also coached competitive bodybuilders, powerlifters and strength athletes. For clients with a physique or strength-sport goal, see how bodybuilding and muscle building are organized at Trinity.
The Approach
Detailed, supportive, challenging. Built on progression.
Gus describes the approach as detailed, supportive, challenging and built around progression, not gimmicks or quick fixes. The aim is to help clients change their bodies, get stronger and build something they can maintain for life.
For women who want to lift, Gus's focus list includes women's weightlifting alongside bodybuilding and lifestyle coaching, with particular attention to bringing up areas such as the legs and glutes.

The Full Range
Everything Gustavo trains.
Gustavo’s Trinity profile lists these specialties, from core strength work to lifestyle coaching:
Bodybuilding is patience translated to muscle. Trinity's hypertrophy trainers program volume, recovery, and nutrition in lockstep — so the work you put in actually shows up in the mirror.
01
VOLUME PROGRAMMED WITH INTENT
Every set has a target — failure, RPE 8, mechanical tension, metabolic stress. No junk volume.
02
PROGRESSIVE FAILURE PROTOCOLS
Drop sets, rest-pause, eccentric overload — the techniques bodybuilders have used for decades, programmed correctly so they actually drive growth.
03
NUTRITION TRAINING THAT PAIRS
Calories, protein, peri-workout fueling. Several Trinity trainers hold PN1 — or pair you with a nutrition specialist on the team.
04
PHOTO + MEASUREMENT TRACKING
Weekly check-ins. We look at the work, not just the scale. If it's not changing, the program adjusts.
Who Gustavo’s clients tend to be
- Lifters who want visible change, not just better numbers
- First-time competitors preparing for stage
- Clients chasing body recomp — leaner + stronger simultaneously
- Lifestyle clients who want a build that lasts
